Within the last decade of the 20th century Tibet has
been an object of great interst in the West.
Indeed, few countries in the world have as long and turbulent history as
"The Land of the Snow Lion". Occupying a vast tableland of
Tibetan (or Trans-Himalayan) Plateau, this once-strong and prosperous state
has often been an object outside invasions, finding strength in its
mountainous landscape and the unusual resilience of its people. In 1951 Tibet failed to withstand the last foreign
invasion and was annexed by communist China. However, Tibetans have
never stopped fighting for their freedom and independence.
This resource was designed as a reference guide to
Tibetan legendary history and its political geography. It consists of a
concise description of major historical events and a series of maps
following the fortunes of the country from the period of Buddhist
penetration to the most recent events. The maps take in the Mongol
invasion, expansion of China
and Britain,
the Simla treaty of 1914, the Chinese invasion of
1950, the uprising of 1956-59 and much more. Each of the maps has been
newly compiled using the latest cartographical techniques in order to
present information in as clear a manner as possible. It serves the needs
of all those interested in Tibetan history, as well as those interested in
the history of Central and East Asia in
general.
