An attempt to establish a branch of Tbilisi State University  in Sukhumi result in an explosion of inter-ethnic violence. At least 20 people are killed by Apsua extremists

Merab Kostava, a popular Georgian anti-communist politician dies in a car accident leaving Zviad Gamsakhurdia the only popular nationalist leader

Supreme Soviet of Abkhazia declares Abkhazian autonomy a “sovereign republic fully independent from Georgia”. The decision was made in the absence of Ethnic Georgian legislators who were instructed from Tbilisi to boycott this session.

 

Supreme Soviet of Georgia annuls the above declaration same day.

 

 

 

December / 1990

 

 

Vladislav Ardzinba is elected chairman of the Abkhazian Supreme Soviet.
