Historically, this
East European nation was closely connected with Poland and Lithuania. In
the distant past, Belarussians also known as Ruthenians were often considered a part of Lithuanian
people, while during the 20th century they were believed to be
either Russians or Poles up until 1991 when they were cast into unexpected
independence as a result of the collapse of the USSR.
As of today, the people of
Belarus are still on their way towards freedom being at the same time, in
search of their own identity.
