This area includes Estonia,
Latvia and Lithuania, three democratic nations, new EU
and NATO members, formerly occupied and annexed by the USSR.
All the three nations have
significant Russian-speaking diasporas, the fact causing constant tensions
with the government of Russian
Federation.
Latvia and Estonia still have unresolved territorial
disputes with Russia
going back to the end of World War II. Lithuania
had territorial dispute with Poland nowadays completely
resolved
