Squeezed between Europe and
Asia Georgia is a country with long and dramatic history going back to 6 C BC.
Almost two centuries of Russian domination from1801-1991 with the short
period of independence in 1918-1921, made this country almost unknown to
the West.
However, with her independence fully
restored by the end of the last century this nation is getting strategic
importance as a bridge between East Mediterranean
and Central Asian regions.
As of today, interests of many
powers both world and region ones, are clashing in Georgia testing her ability to survive and
build a prosperous democratic society despite a number of problems among
them Kremlin-orchestrated conflicts in Abkhazia and Shida-Kartli
(South Ossetia).
